About health insurance in Thailand

Significant terms and concepts

Health insurance in Thailand is a key element in ensuring health for both locals and expats. The country's healthcare system offers high quality services, but the cost of treatment can be significant, especially in private clinics. Insurance helps to cover these costs, providing access to a wide range of medical services without having to worry about the financial implications.

IPD / Stationary coverage

Coverage for hospitalization purposes, meaning you are hospitalized and required to stay overnight or for a couple of days as recommended by your doctor.

Health insurance coverage

There are many options for health insurance. Most people only get insurance for emergencies, so they only need hospitalization. Coverage for doctor visits and procedures that do not require hospitalization is considered outpatient. You can also add and remove options such as dental and vision coverage. If you want to lower the cost of your health care premium, you can set a deductible or an excess.

Excess or Deductible

Helps reduce the cost of the insurance premium. A deductible is a certain amount of money that the insured must pay on his or her own before the insurance company will pay an insurance claim.

No Claims Bonus

Some insurance companies offer a bonus for no claims during the year. The amount of the discount is up to 10%, so the insurance premium will be lower.

OPD / Outpatient Coverage

Coverage for doctor visits and outpatient procedures that do not require a hospital stay for observation. This includes doctor-prescribed medications and lab tests.

Vision coverage

Coverage for vision-related problems, including fitting glasses or contact lenses and any examinations and tests related to your vision.

Dental coating

Coverage for dental problems including routine procedures, cleanings, fillings, etc. However, it does not cover anything related to cosmetic procedures.

Coverage of maternity expenses

Some insurance policies include maternity cover. In Thailand, there is usually no option to exclude this cover; it is often provided as a bonus to the policy or as part of a more expensive insurance plan that includes maternity cover.
*Maternity insurance usually has a waiting period of 10 months or 1 year, depending on the choice of insurance company.

Questions and answers

FAQ on health insurance in Thailand

Who can apply?

It depends on the insurance company, some insurance companies allow you to apply up to age 70, but most insurance companies only accept new applications up to age 60 - 64.

What is the condition of residence?

Clients applying for health insurance must be residents of Thailand.

How much insurance do I need?

Customers ask this question usually when they first arrive in Thailand. Most customers just want insurance for emergencies, so they usually opt for basic coverage ranging from 600,000 baht to 1,200,000. Others want more extensive coverage for serious cases, so the amount of coverage can be as high as 32,000,000.

What is the difference between outpatient and inpatient coverage?

Inpatient coverage is for hospitalization purposes, which means you are admitted to and stay in the hospital overnight or for a few days on your doctor's recommendation. Outpatient coverage is for doctor visits and outpatient procedures that do not require you to stay in the hospital for observation. This includes prescribed drugs and lab tests that your doctor prescribes or orders.

If I file my claim today, when will I get my insurance?

Most insurance companies have a 30 day waiting period when it comes to illnesses, in case of emergencies companies usually cover the claim immediately. When buying health insurance, check with your agent about this issue.

Do I need to undergo a medical examination?

If you are 60 years old or younger, you will not need a medical exam. Sometimes insurers ask for tests and medical records, so it is best to have them on hand. If you are over 64 years old, you will have to get a medical exam or give the insurance company your medical records.

If I am over 70 years old, can I still buy health insurance?

The age of entry into insurance in most insurance companies is up to 60 years of age. Some offer insurance up to the age of 64. Those that accept clients over 65 are international insurance companies and their premiums can be very expensive. We sometimes suggest that our clients over 65 consider accident insurance as an option.

I have a baby or newborn, can I get insurance just for them?

No. Most insurance companies require at least one parent to be listed on the policy with the minor. There are some companies that allow children to sign up alone, but the rates will be different. (Higher than if you apply with a parent).

Am I insured when traveling outside of Thailand?

Clients are usually insured when they leave Thailand, although you will have to pay first and then be reimbursed when you return to Thailand. Be sure to keep all original medical certificates and receipts for reimbursement.

Can I visit the hospital of my choice?

Yes, you can choose any medical organization you like. However, each insurance company has a list of networks, and if you go to a hospital or clinic that is not on their list, you will have to pay first and then get reimbursed.

Can the insurance company refuse to pay me?

Accidents and sudden illnesses such as dengue are difficult to deny as they cannot be linked to pre-existing illnesses. Though insurance companies reserve the right to investigate further. Insurance companies are cautious about claims occurring in the first few months/years as they may be related to a pre-existing illness. Some clients choose to undergo a full examination before applying for health insurance, although this is not compulsory.

Why do I need health insurance?

Health insurance is needed for your peace of mind, there are many sad stories of people in Thailand who moved to Thailand without health insurance and ended up in a very difficult situation and without money to pay hospital bills due to unforeseen circumstances. Health insurance will ensure that you are protected against health problems and accidents that may occur.

Do I need outpatient insurance?

If a client is looking for insurance for emergencies only, we suggest that they drop outpatient coverage. Visiting a doctor can be cheap, especially if you go to regular hospitals that are not known as international hospitals. Outpatient care can be easily explained as a hospital visit, a doctor's consultation and prescription or any medical procedure that does not require an overnight stay.

What is social security and is it enough?

All employed people are eligible for Social Security health insurance if they have a work permit. Contributions are mandatory, which is 5% of your income - but not less than 83 baht per month and not more than 750 baht per month. Social Security can be used at a registered government hospital near where you work or live. The problem with social security is that public hospitals in Thailand have limited resources compared to private medical care, which is covered by private insurance.

I am pregnant, can I apply for health insurance?

You can apply for health insurance, but you will not be covered by maternity insurance. The waiting period for maternity is 10 months from the date of signing the health insurance policy.

Are there waiting periods that I should be aware of?

Insurance companies treat the waiting period differently. The most common type of waiting period is 30 days for local insurance companies such as Bupa, Pacific Cross and LMG. For international companies such as MSH and AXA, there is no waiting period unless specified in the offer letter. Feel free to ask your agent about the waiting period for each company.

Will I be able to renew my insurance until I die?

Insurance companies usually have an age limit, they will only cover you up to age 80 or 90. It depends on the insurance company, so be sure to ask your agent what age you can extend your health insurance to.

Does health insurance cover accidents or traveling as a passenger on the back of a motorcycle?

Health insurance companies will cover accidents unless you are under the influence of alcohol or negligent.

Does the insurance cover people with pre-existing conditions?

Everyone is welcome to apply, you will receive coverage, but unfortunately pre-existing conditions will be excluded from coverage.

If I apply now, when will I receive my paperwork?

The application process is different for everyone, it may take longer if you have pre-existing medical conditions. The application process takes 3-4 days, and after signing the offer letter, the card and policy will be sent to your specified address within 7-10 working days.

Does your health affect your coverage?

A healthy lifestyle has its benefits, insurance companies usually impose a risk fee on obese customers. If you have a healthy lifestyle, your policy will have no exclusions and no risk charge.

What are general exemptions?

General exclusions are usually stated in the policy, but the most common are:
1. Drug and alcohol abuse
2. Self-inflicted injuries
3. Infertility
4. Cosmetic surgery
5. Preventive Care
Feel free to ask your agent for a copy of the policy wording before purchasing a plan.
